A gap exists between studying the civilian experience of the war, and the military component.
When we consider German military necessity, civilian and military goals are very much entwined. The Canadian soldier spends more time with the public than with the enemy; he is rarely face to face with the enemy and far more often in contact with civilians. Should the civilian and the military experiences of war be separated when we teach them? |
Who are the German soldiers?
What are some reasons a soldier might be AWOL? How do you end a war? How do you move on? How do you remember that war? What do you remember? How to the dominant narratives in history change over time? Why do we privilege stories of soldiers who died at war over stories of local people who died on the job, building a community? Whose life is more valuable? |
